In Thursday's doubles, Rainer and Nicolas lost the first set before having to retire due to a left calf injury to Schuettler. "The leg pinched nonstop, and I didn't want to endanger my start in next week's Miami event," said Rainer. The Indian Wells tournament physician ordered a three-day-long tennis break for the German. The final result was: Black/Ullyett d Kiefer/Schuettler 62 ret.

The order of play is up and the doubles match is slated for Stadium 2. They are first up with a noon start on Thursday.
Tuesday 16 March
Well, after seemingly forever, they finally put up some results from today's events... and Rainer and Nicolas have won again, defeating Zimonjic and Sargsian by the score of 62 63 to advance to the quarterfinals. The Germans will play either Erlich and Ram or Black and Ullyett (they play later today). Ehrlich/Ram upset the 8th seeded Hood and Rodriguez 76(4) 36 76(3) in the first round of play.
The Zimbabwe pair of Wayne Black and Kevin Ullyett prevailed today, 36 64 63 over Erlich/Ram and will be the opponents of Schuettler and Kiefer. In singles, Rainer played Black and lost back in 2000 at Segovia (Spain) in the quarters 63 46 26. The match will not be on Wednesday, the four all get a day off.
Site Insight: I finally sat down and learned/figured out how to add a Comments and Trackback feature to the blog today. They're supposed to appear at the end of each post, but since I only do one 'post' a tournament and then edit it to add the individual days, you can essentially find them at the first day of each event. (I hope that makes sense, I'm super sick and nothing is working today.)

I've also started a list of other Blogs that I read, find interesting, etc. There are blog search engines out there, but they don't cover everything... check them out if you have the chance. See the trouble I get in when I can spend hours online due to illness, hence the rearranging of right column.

In another good doubles showing, Rainer and Nicolas upset third-seeded Bjorkman and Woodbridge on Sunday by the score of 75 16 75. They have Monday off and next face Sargis Sargsian and Nenad Zimonjic on Tuesday. They are on Stadium 2 and kick off the day with their 10am match.

Update: Well, by 9:28pm NY time, Rainer lost, 16 67(3). Man, there goes my "Monday theory"... Other seeds to lose, all in two sets as well, were Philippoussis (#12 to Youzhny), Kuerten (#15 fell to Dent), Robredo (#19 to Corretja), #20 F. Lopez to Horna and Ginepri (#26 to Blake) with both #10 Paradorn falling to Haas (61 62) and #17 Verkerk losing to Lapentti 75 64 later that evening.
In doubles, Rainer is again pairing with Nicolas Kiefer - they play Sunday against third seeded Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge. They are on Stadium 2 as the fifth match (second to last) for that court. Bjorkman and Woodbridge won Syndey this year and were semifinalists at the Australian Open, while Bjorkman reached the finals of Dubai with Leander Paes.

Update: Arthurs defeated Browne 63 62 and will be Rainer's 2nd round opponent. Their match has been scheduled for Saturday as the fifth match of the day on Court 4. Play begins at 10am with Zabaleta/Sluiter, Martinez/Craybas, Levy/Bjorkman, Benesova/Maleeva, Rainer v Wayne and then a WTA doubles match concludes that court's action.
Today decides the opponent that Rainer will face... Friday afternoon sees Australia's Wayne Arthurs play Argentina's Federico Browne in a first round dual of qualifiers. The winner takes on sixth-seeded Schuettler as the Pacific Life Open nears the meat of the matches. Another tidbit of news from the event is that Tommy Haas won his first round match in three sets. He defeated Thomas Enqvist 64 36 63 in his first ATP win since October 2002 and his shoulder problems for the entire 2003 season. Next up is 10th seed Paradorn Srichaphan.
Schuettler has never faced Browne before, but he's played Arthurs five times in his career. The 6'3 lefty won their first two encounters, but Schuettler has taken the latest three - all happening in 2003, including their match at Indian Wells. Action has started at the TMS Indian Wells, also known as the Pacific Life Open. Rainer is seeded sixth and has a bye the first round and will face a qualifier when he hits the court. Federer, Ferrero, Roddick, Coria and Agassi comprise the top five seeds for this California event. Here is the page that lists all the draws, including the WTA portion of the event. The ATP doubles draw will be held on Friday.
