ABN AMRO/Rotterdam

Friday 20 February

Schuettler lost to Hewitt in the quarterfinals, 67(5) 36. Some people seem to enjoy beating up on Rainer this year in the media, but the big news of the day was Henman sending Federer packing, 63 76(9).

Quarters: Doubles Out, Singles Set

Today Kohlmann and Schuettler were defeated in the doubles quarterfinals by Erlich and Ram, 36 67(4).
In his Friday singles action, Rainer will face Lleyton Hewitt - who overcame Thomas Johansson 76(6) 76(3) today. Their quarterfinal match is the second of the day, play begins at 11am. Rainer and Lleyton, who physically square off almost evenly, have only met once, in the 2000 Davis Cup World Group Quarters on grass in Australia. Schuettler won 26 63 64, getting Germany on the board on the second day of singles play (Kohlmann won his singles match later, Australia won 3-2).
Hewitt so far this year is 11-1, winning Sydney and sits at 8th in the rankings. On facing Rainer next, he commented, "Another baseline player, that won't be easy."

Rainer Rids Radek

Schuettler today defeated Radek Stepanek in the 2nd round by the score of 63 64 and next takes on the Hewitt/Johansson winner in the quarterfinals. Stepanek advanced to the second round after defeating Olivier Rochus 57 62 62 on Monday. Stepanek held a 3-1 advantage against Rainer in their previous four meetings, with Rainer winning their first match up in 2002 at Munich S 64 63. However, 2003 was all Radek with wins in Gstaad Q 46 26, Halle R16 46 76 36 and Miami TMS R32 46 46. Stepanek is currently ranked 74th and this year has had doubles success, reaching the finals in Auckland with Novak and the semis in Milan with Damm.

In doubles, Schuettler and Kohlmann face Erlich and Ram on Thursday, first match of the day on Court 1 at 11am.

There's Something About Rainer... Articles
  • "I am going to enjoy this victory first," says Rainer in this piece from the tourney's site after Monday's win

  • Rainer speaks via ATP's new audio page. He was happy to have a good win, though not very happy with his serve in the 2nd serve. He feels more fit than in Australia and that his legs are better, and he's looking forward to a good match vs Stepanek.

Rainer Schuettler is back in action today as he participates in the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. He hits the court on Day 1 as he plays Monday's second night match (first begins at 7:30) on Centre Court against Stefan Koubek. Schuettler is 2-3 lifetime against the Austrian, winning their first and last meetings. In total, here are their results: 2003 Cincinnati R64 62 75, 2003 Munich Q 36 46, 2001 Kitzbuhel R16 62 57 57, 1998 Espinho R32 64 26 36 and 1998 Chennai R32 61 63. Koubek's best result this year was reaching the Doha finals in doubles with Roddick, he is currently ranked 91st while Rainer is at 118th. Schuettler is seeded third behind Federer and Ferrero and ahead of Paradorn and Henman.

On the doubles side of things, Rainer is teaming up with countryman Michael Kohlmann. They face the top-seeded duo of Bhupathi/Mirnyi in their first round matchup on Tuesday in the third match on Court 1.

Before the tourney began, four players, including Rainer, played on a floating court, here's a quick blurb on that. I'll add a photo from this later today as well as from Monday's match (blue shirt alert).
