.: Rainer Schuettler ... Rainer Schüttler :.

This is a Rainer Schuettler appreciation page. If you enjoy fantastic tennis, you'd appreciate him too.
To get started - Rainer is pronounced RHINE-er not ray-ner and Schuettler is pronounced SHOOT-ler not shut-ler. He is an accomplished Top 10 player who has played in Davis Cup as well as two Olympic Games (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 Silver Medalist) for Germany.

Estoril Open

Wednesday 14 April

Rainer Schuettler and Florian Mayer are scheduled to take on Lucas Arnold and Augustin Calleri today as the final match on Court 1. Mayer, a qualifier, advanced into the third round in singles play with a nice win over Radek Stepanek 64 62 after earlier upsetting 7th seed Gaudio 63 64 in the first round.
Schuettler/Mayer lost to Calleri/Arnold today, 26 16 in their first round of doubles action.

Tuesday 13 April

Update: In a tightly contested first round match, Schuettler fell to Romania's Victor Hanescu by the score of 67(4) 76(4) 36. It's the third time Rainer has lost in Estoril and marks another too-soon departure for the German.
"The only difference between us in this game was that I failed to take my chances," he said of the loss. "I came from Davis Cup indoors to the clay and only had an hour to practice on the clay, but I still should have won this match." The always fighting Rainer added: "I didn't take my chances, the third set was close. I'm working hard, and I'm expecting to play better soon."
Though it hasn't been a great season so far, Schuettler does seem to be getting more press mentions than last year - even as the march towards Houston was being determined. Maybe what they say about any press, even bad press, plays into something here. Regardless, things will fall into place sooner or later.
PS - Back by popular demand, the German word of the week... zuckerkrank

Schuettler takes to the court on Day Two as he faces Victor Hanescu on Center Court. Their match is scheduled as the third of the day, following the Safin/Saulnier match that starts 'not before 2:30.' After Rainer, Ivanisevic takes on Nadal. I don't see a ticker on the main event's site, but through TennisMagazin.de they will have one.

Davis Cup Update: The pairings for the September matchups are out, and Germany is to take on the Slovak Republic. It's not an easy draw, here is an article from TennisMagazin. Check out the Davis Cup list of pairings. Winners get promoted into World Group play for 2005. Sport.ard report on the selection, with quotes on how it's not an easy task for the Germans.
