.: Rainer Schuettler ... Rainer Schüttler :.

This is a Rainer Schuettler appreciation page. If you enjoy fantastic tennis, you'd appreciate him too.
To get started - Rainer is pronounced RHINE-er not ray-ner and Schuettler is pronounced SHOOT-ler not shut-ler. He is an accomplished Top 10 player who has played in Davis Cup as well as two Olympic Games (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 Silver Medalist) for Germany.

Davis Cup

Sunday 11 April

In reverse singles action, Schuettler defeated Harel Levy 63 76(5) while Kiefer also won against Noam Okun in a tight 62 67(2) 76(3). The wins solidified a sweep of the Israel squad and in September Germany will face a squad from the losers of the World Group action. The draw for this matchup will be on Tuesday.

Saturday 10 April

Team captain Patrik Kuhnen has instituted a substitution in the doubles action for today. He is putting Tommy Haas and Alexander Waske on the court against Israel's Erlich and Ram. Schuettler and Kiefer were to play, but (my opinion) after the solid 2-0 showing on Friday, the two will get a day off to ready themselves for singles play on Sunday as Germany needs to win just one of the three matches to advance.
Waske and Haas battled back to force a fifth set after being down early, 26 57 62 64. In a huge effort, the Germans took the final set 63 and now enable the team to play in late September as they continue to work their way back into the World Group. (Rules on Davis Cup "explained" here.)
When I first saw that these two were on the court, I was beginning to have serious doubts about my already poor translation skills or thought that my times of updating the site on a mere 3.5 hours of sleep had caught up with me!

Friday 9 April

Germany got off to a great start today as both Rainer Schuettler and Nicolas Kiefer won their singles matches against Israel and are up 2-0. This sets up a great doubles showdown for Saturday against Erlich and Ram. Rainer won against Noam Okum, 62 62 61 while Kiefer defeated Harel Levy 62 75 63.

Europe-Africa Zone Group One/9 April - 11 April
Thursday 8 April

Rainer Schuettler, along with countrymen Nicolas Kiefer, Alexander Waske and Tommy Haas, comprise the German squad that faces Israel in Round Two. Schuettler plays on Friday against Noam Okum.
In doubles, Rainer and Kiefer battle familiar faces across the net - Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram. Schuettler this year (teamed with Michael Kohlmann) faced them in February in the Rotterdam quarters, falling 36 67. Erlich and Ram (as a team they rank 8th, individually they are # 23 and 19, respectively in the doubles entry rankings) this year have reached the finals in Chennai and Rotterdam and the semis in Milan.
