This is a Rainer Schuettler appreciation page. If you enjoy fantastic tennis, you'd appreciate him too.
To get started - Rainer is pronounced RHINE-er not ray-ner and Schuettler is pronounced SHOOT-ler not shut-ler. He is an accomplished Top 10 player who has played in Davis Cup as well as two Olympic Games (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 Silver Medalist) for Germany.

adidas International

Friday 16 January

Yves AllegroJumbo Rainer
After waiting through some rain delays on Friday, Schuettler and Allegro were forced to retire near the end of the first set due to an injury to Yves' leg. As a result, the Bryan brothers head into the finals against Bjorkman/Woodbridge with a 52 ret. win. Bjorkman/Woodbridge advanced with a win over Calleri/Volandri 76(5) 62. Bjorkman and Woodbridge went on to claim the title.
During his time at the adidas International, Rainer took part in some other activities. These included a charity cocktail party in Sydney for the National Breast Cancer Foundation of Australia. The event, which included an auction, raised over $14,000 AUD to help fight the #1 cause of death for Australian women. Other players who also attended were Jonas Bjorkman, Mardy Fish, Sargis Sargsian, Wayne Ferreira, Todd Woodbridge, Rick Leach, Jeff Morrison and Nenad Zimonjic. Rainer, Bjorkman and Ferreira also checked out a Manly Beach BBQ hosted by former ATP pro Sandon Stolle. Tips on surfing were given by 6-time world champ Layne Beachley and events included a ferry ride through Sydney Harbour. (Info courtesy of the ATP Insider.)

Rainer is 6th for Oz Open
Seeds for the upcoming Australian Open were drawn today and here's the order for the men and women. Tennis-X.com has an Australian Open info page, has some dates and times of the matches that may be of interest.

Back to the adidas International... Rainer and Yves will face top-ranked Mike and Bob Bryan in the semis on Friday at 3:30 on Court 1. The brothers defeated Erlich/Prieto 64 67(3) 75 in their Thursday quarterfinals. I'll add more later, I have new snow to shovel.

Wednesday 14 January

In doubles action, Rainer Schuettler and Yves Allegro sent the 4th seeded pair of Wayne Arthurs and Paul Hanley packing, defeating them in two sets 63 75.
This lines up a semifinal match against the winner of the top-seeded Bryan Brothers vs Jonathan Erlich and Sebastian Prieto, who face off in Thursday's second Centre Court evening match. (Erlich just won Chennai with Andy Ram while "The Brothers" took Adelaide.)
**Useful reader tip... if you can't keep the lefty-righty (Bob-Mike) straight, to tell the Bryan twins apart, it's Bob = Beads. And a side note, I have finally found a photo of Allegro that I'll add later in the day.

Tuesday 13 January

**Update 2:30AM NY time, Schuettler and Allegro lost 36 67, more later**... And after I got some sleep and looked for further info later in the day, that "more" turned out to be not only a revised score but also a new winner... "Allegro/Schuettler d Vanhoudt/Verkerk 36 76(8) 75 (corrected score)" from the ATP's Results page this morning!
Rainer and Yves take on the 4th seed Wayne Arthurs and Paul Hanley in the quarterfinals. They are scheduled for Wednesday on Court 5 to follow the 11am Bryan brothers (USA) vs Healey/Kerr (AUS) match.

  • Sport.ard interview with Rainer, mainly on doping in tennis. Also this quote: "I look forward to Melbourne, and I think myself capable there again. The Australians understand the sport, they are mad fans, super spectators. I always played particularly gladly in Australia. Melbourne 2003 for me naturally is a stimulus, but one must think so with each tournament, also with the Grand Slams from round to round. I feel no pressure, but try, to give like always my best."

Monday 12 January
Well, Mondays aren't Rainer's best day so far in 2004... he lost 46 46 to Joachim Johansson in the first round of the adidas International. “He was serving huge today. I only had one break point. In practice I've hardly lost a set this year but I've lost two matches. It's not ideal going into the Australian Open this way. I need more matches to be prepared," said Rainer. "But if I can win a few matches there my confidence will come back quickly.”
For doubles, Schuettler and Allegro's match is "not before 2pm" on Court 5 for Tuesday.

Sunday 11 January

Rainer Schuettler takes part in the adidas International this week as the second seed in Sydney with 1 Ferrero, 3 Moya, 4 Philippoussis and 5 Paradorn rounding out the Top 5. Rainer faces Joachim Johansson in his first match after the Swede entered via qualifying. This will be their first meeting and I would think one of the taller players Rainer will ever face, as Johansson is 6'6" and nearly 200 pounds.
The winner takes on either Mardy Fish or Arnaud Clement.
The Centre Court match is the second one of the evening following the completion of the WTA's Rubin v Watson (7:30pm start).
In doubles, Schuettler is pairing with Yves Allegro of Switzerland. In 2003 the duo defeated USA's Fish/Hodge 76(2) 67(4) 75 before losing in the second round to Bjorkman/Woodbridge 36 46 at the US Open. They face Tom Vanhoudt and Martin Verkerk, who are pairing together for the first time.
