Schuettler Into Semis
In quarterfinal action, Rainer defeated Mantilla in three sets today, 61 46 62. He will play Igor Andreev, who advanced after defeating Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 63 64. They are the second match of the day, following the Federer v Potito Starace semi and a presentation honoring Marc Rosset. This will be the first meeting between the two, in 2004 Andreev was a semifinalist at Boca Raton, quarterfinalist at Queen's Club and Chennai while on the doubles side he won Boca Raton (w/Tursunov) and was a semifinalist at Valencia (w/Sanchez).

Schuettler Through
Schuettler defeated countryman Florian Mayer 63 62 in the second round today. Next up is Felix Mantilla in the quarterfinals on Friday, scheduled as the last match of the day (follows singles match that won't start before 3:30pm). Federer v Karlovic is 1st up, then Rosset v Stepanek needs to be completed (in 2nd set), then Novak's singles match - then the winners of the 1st two singles matches must get back on court to face one another.
This will be the third meeting between the two, who haven't faced one another since meeting twice in 2002. At Indianapolis, Mantilla won in the semis 64 16 64 while Schuettler won at Scottsdale 60 26 61. This year, Mantilla was a quarterfinalist at Chennai.

The team (I think they were/are roommates) of Rainer Schuettler and Ivo Heuberger were defeated by Rosset and Wawrinka today, 63 76(5). No doubt the center court crowd was cheering loudly for the wildcard Swiss duo to pull out a first round win.
In singles, Schuettler is set to play Florian Mayer on Thursday. The two Germans take to the court after the all-Spanish match between Ferrer and Mantilla concludes (they start at 11am).

Singles Win, Doubles Next
Third-seeded Rainer Schuettler won his first round match today against Michel Kratochvil, 64 16 63. He will next play fellow German Florian Mayer, who advanced after defeating Albert Portas 75 63. The nearly two hour match was closer than the final score, but Schuettler was able to avoid suffering another first round loss.
On Wednesday, Schuettler and Heuberger play their first round doubles match against Swiss team Rosset and Wawrinka. They are the fight and final match of the day at the Roy Emerson Arena, and follow the Costa/Andreev match which is to start 'not before 5:30.'
The huge Mayer (a mere 6'5") has had a huge 2004 - he's in Gstaad fresh off his quarterfinals appearance at Wimbledon (L to Grosjean 57 46 26), he won in Mexico City, was a finalist in Wolfsburg and semifinalist at Estoril and Braunschweig earlier this year.

Two Cows Are Enough
Once again, following Wimbledon, Rainer Schuettler is participating in the Swiss Open. The clay event has Federer as the top seed, followed by Ferrero, Schuettler, Novak and Pavel. Federer has hinted that he doesn't really need another cow - his Juliette has had a calf since his first Wimbledon win.
Schuettler takes to the court for his first round singles match on Tuesday against Swiss wildcard Michel Kratochvil. They are the second match of the day in Roy Emerson Arena, play begins at 11am. This will be their third meeting with Schuettler holding a 2-0 advantage, winning in the first round of Wimbledon last year 63 46 67(4) 75 and in the finals at 2001 Shanghai 63 64. Kratochvil has reached the quarterfinals in Ljubljana, Munich, Napoli and Reggio Emilia this year.
Ivo Heuberger and Rainer are playing doubles, their first round match is against Swiss wildcard duo Marc Rosset and Stanislas Wawrinka.
